Meet Leisha
Hi I’m Leisha!
I started this blog to empower people (especially women) to work on their homes themselves. Both to save money on simple fixes, and to be able to design the home (and furniture) of your dreams without having an unlimited budget.
Where it all started
Several years ago I started seeing all the female woodworkers online making furniture and designing their homes and thought that looks so cool, I bet I could do that! I was always too afraid I’d mess it up to start though. Fast forward several years and I found myself a divorced single mom with only my income and a house that I soon realized had a lot more issues than the inspection had noted. I had some basic knowledge from my dad and did some simple repairs but was too afraid of messing up to tackle anything beyond that.
That all changed when the drains in my house collapsed and the insurance company sent a contractor to fix them. The contractor had to tear up the floors in my daughter’s room to get their equipment in the crawl space and closed off most of my house with plastic while they applied chemicals. I was told it would take two weeks and 5 months later I still wasn’t back in my house and the contractor was breaking more things than they were fixing. They also tried to tell me they couldn’t find ANY flooring anywhere that was similar, in order to try and upcharge me to more expensive flooring.
At that point I had had it. I called the insurance and had them come out to see all the work that had not been done and got back what money I could. It was enough money to make the needed repairs myself, but not enough to pay anyone. Not to mention after that experience I didn’t really trust another contractor to do the job correctly.
Some friends came over and helped me level the subfloor and lay the flooring. After that I replaced the trim, added quarter round, learned how to cope trim, caulked and painted it, and cut and stained a large piece of reducing transition strip to bridge the gap from one floor to another. From there I was hooked. I got such a sense of accomplishment looking at that room and knowing that I did it and that gave me the courage to start working on other needed repairs and upgrades.
I hope you will join me on this journey and I hope that you too gain the confidence to realize you can absolutely do this! I hope you’ll stick around and learn some helpful tips along the way!
